Care Coordinator (Volunteer Position)

Camp Goodtimes is seeking a mental health/behavioral health professional to join our volunteer team for our nine-day summer camp sessions. This position will care for the social, emotional, and mental wellbeing of campers, ages 8-17, and fellow volunteer staff while camp is in session. This role will partner with the on-site medical and leadership teams to ensure our top priority of camper safety is met with care and compassion.

Camp Goodtimes—one of The Goodtimes Project’s no-cost programs designed to spread hope, love, and joy—is a week-long summer camp for pediatric cancer patients, survivors, siblings, and bereaved siblings on Vashon Island, WA (outside of Seattle). Each of our two camp sessions can host up to 110 campers and are staffed by 70+ volunteers, in addition to Goodtimes’ paid staff. Medical needs and physical wellness are led by our volunteer nurse and provider teams. The new Care Coordinator position will focus on supporting social-emotional and behavioral needs, ensuring campers and staff can thrive at camp.

2024 volunteer dates (must be present for a duration of nine days which is inclusive of in-person staff training):

  • June 21-29, 2024

  • July 12-20, 2024

Responsibilities:

  • Help create a healthy camp environment for all campers and staff by promoting positive wellness strategies and approaches.

  • Serve as a supplemental onsite, on-demand psychosocial resource for emotional challenges and behavioral concerns that occur at/during camp. NOTE: we do not offer therapy to either campers or staff.

  • Be a caring and trusted resource from whom campers and staff can seek advice, get tools/strategies, and practice/role-play hard conversations related to interpersonal conflicts, cabin dynamics, and behavioral concerns.

  • Create a supportive space for campers and/or staff to process triggers brought up at camp.

  • Provide consultation, guidance, and support to counselors regarding their campers’ mental health and wellbeing.

  • Act as behavioral support when anxiety, depression, emotional regulation, or other mental health issues are impacting a camper's or staffer's ability to participate in camp.

  • Provide assessment and direct intervention in cases of mental health and/or behavioral crises in collaboration with the camp director, unit leaders, and cabin staff.

  • Advocate for campers’ needs and help coordinate program and activity modifications when needed with camp leadership and cabin staff to ensure an inclusive space for all—including campers with anxiety, depression, learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, physical limitations, and more.

  • Communicate with camper parents when warranted and upon consult with the camp director or in emergency situations.

  • Participate in daily/nightly meetings with camp leadership to ensure that camper and staff wellbeing are central to the operation of camp.

  • Assist in the creation of and lead the delivery of online and/or in-person staff training modules, and support ongoing staff learning and development during camp.

  • As needed, facilitate programming and/or camper conversations related to grief, loss, and emotional processing.

Qualifications:

  • Higher-level degree or license in mental health field, including but not limited to: social work, mental health counseling, psychology, youth psychiatry, and/or family therapy.

  • Minimum of 2 years clinical experience working with children, adolescents, and/or young adults.

  • Exceptional skill and capacity for engagement and relationship building with young people.

  • Camp experience—either personal or professional—preferred.

  • Excellent crisis management skills.

  • Self-starter who can proactively integrate into camp culture, find ways to contribute, and deal with ambiguity.

  • Humor, adaptability, and collaboration are valued.

  • LGBTQIA+ ally.

Requirements:

  • Must pass a background check and have exemplary references.

  • Vaccinations must be current and include the primary COVID vaccination series.

  • Available June 21-29 and/or July 12-20, 2024 with ability to dedicate 5-10 virtual hours per month in May and June to the co-development of staff training modules.
